William Carrington Stephens, 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 30, 2017 in Danville. Born on October 1, 1927, he was the son of the late Joseph and Hattie Stephens and the husband of Dorothy Richmond Stephens. Bill lived his entire life in the Danville area. During his teen years, he developed a tremendous interest in the game of golf while caddying at Danville Golf Club. That interest led to a lifelong love and mastery of the game. He was a founding member of Tuscarora Country Club and enjoyed the great camaraderie and friendships on the golf course. Bill and his brother Gene were owners and operators of D&M Charter Bus Company that originated as a business dedicated to transporting workers to Martinsville from Danville. From its humble beginnings, the business grew into a major charter and touring operation. Bill served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, and he was a charter member of American Legion Post 325 in Danville. He was recently honored for having 70 years of continuous service to the Legion – the most of any active member. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. Bill is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy, his daughter Carole Stephens Read (Pen) of Lynchburg, and his grandson, William Pendleton Read of Lynchburg. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Emma Stephens Nelson, and his brothers, Raymond and Eugene Stephens. Bill’s greatest joy was his family. Funeral services will be held at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Reverend Bart A. Fletcher and the Reverend Robert D. Morrison, Jr. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 11:00 AM with family visitation taking place one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Highland Burial Park.
