Walter Terry Owen, age 74 of Vernon Hill, died on Monday, January 30, 2017 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Mr. Owen was born on June 27, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, a son of the late Walter Nowlin Owen and Clara Terry Owen. He was a graduate of Spring Garden High School and a 1967 graduate of the University of Richmond. He is survived by his 2 daughters and their families, Kelly and Matt Bryan of Danville and Cheri and Kris Poston of Virginia Beach; granddaughters, Sarah Bryan and Brooke and Brynn Poston; one sister, Carolyn Owen Baker of Richmond and one nephew, Matthew Baker and his wife, Lindsey of Fairfax. Mr. Owen was a lifelong member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church. He served in the US Marine Corps Reserves. He taught and coached at numerous schools in Carroll County and Pittsylvania County before retiring in 1997. Mr. Owen was a well-known umpire and referee for numerous athletic events in Danville and the surrounding areas. He was an obvious sports fan, who loved watching NASCAR racing. On behalf of their Father, his daughters would like to say a special thank you to his caregivers, Carol and Kim and the staff at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for taking such good care of him. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2017 at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 7:30 pm Thursday at Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main St., and at other times at the daughter’s residence, 121 North Woodberry Ave. Danville, VA. Memorial donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation or Mount Tabor Baptist Church.
