Wallace "Berry" Maultsby, 54, passed away on June 27 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born in Fayetteville, NC to Virginia Hauser Maultsby and Wallace Berry Maultsby, Sr. A fighter from an early age, Berry survived open heart surgery when he was only five years old. Berry made a full recovery and graduated from West Montgomery High School in Montgomery County, NC in l977. He went on to earn a Bachelor's of Science from NC State, furthered his education with a Doctorate from the Pennsylvania School of Optometry. In 1989, Berry moved to Danville, VA and worked as an independent doctor of optometry. By 1997 he had opened his private practice on Mount Cross Road, where he worked until health issues required him to close his practice in 2010. Berry was a member of West Main Baptist Church, passionate about classic films, and a dedicated optometrist, having a twenty-five year membership to the American Optometric Association. Berry loved his family, friends and patients deeply. During his fight against acute leukemia over the last twelve years, he would feel that love reciprocated. He made countless visits to Wake Forest Medical Center, where oncologist Dr. Powell and his staff provided care that went beyond that of a patient-doctor relationship. Berry's strong will and sense of humor saw him through multiple surgeries, dialysis, and many other complications due to his illness. In addition to his parents Wally and Virginia, Berry is survived by his best friend and wife Julia, son Nathan, daughter Meredith, sisters Janie and Charlene Maultsby, mother-in-law Sarah Lester Atkinson, sister-in-law Nina A. Giles and her husband Billy Giles, brother-in-law Charles J. Atkinson, niece, Megan L. Evans and her husband Nathan Evans, nephews Aaren Spinks and Rob Lindsey. A service celebrating his life will take place at West Main Baptist Church, 450 West Main Street, Danville, VA on Monday, June 30, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. with the Reverend Bruce Wilson officiating. A reception in the fellowship hall will follow. The family will receive visitors at 333 Chadwyck Drive. A special thank you goes out to the professional optometry group opt.com, where Berry was known by many of his online colleagues as "Iron Man". Thanks also to the friends and family who loved and supported Berry, particularly in the last twelve years of his life.
