Vickie Allen Fuquay was born June 11, 1954 - the beautiful baby girl of James Lee Allen and Mae Humphrey Allen and her adoring sister, Penny Allen Borup. Throughout her life, her external beauty was second only to the beautiful and caring person she was on the inside.
Born in Danville and raised on Northmont Blvd, her neighbors, the Atkins, Bass, Hardy, and Ray families, were an extension of her family. Her love for animals was evident at a very young age, where instead of dressing up dolls, she dressed up her cats.
In the fall of her senior year of high school, she met her soulmate but didn’t realize it until a few years later. After graduating in 1972 from George Washington High School, she was trained as a respiratory therapist at Danville Memorial Hospital. She reconnected with the love of her life, Daniel Garrett Fuquay, and they were married in 1976.
Vickie and Daniel built a beautiful life together, welcoming two daughters, Melissa Anne Fuquay (Chris) and Lauren Fuquay Gardner (Dan), along with a myriad of dogs, cats, fish, and the occasional wildlife rescue. More recently, her golden girls – Whim, Berkley, Eve, and Sage – were members of the Hearts of Gold pet therapy program, which brought much joy to the residents and staff at Bright Leaf Place, Brookdale, Roman Eagle, and Stratford Rehabilitation.
In 1995, Vickie became an employee at Raywood Landscape Center to “just help out for the holidays,” and never left. She built a bird department, brought in special speakers, developed an inventory of Japanese maples, and grew quite the customer base – and she truly loved her customers. She enjoyed her work there and the friendships with all the “Raywood girls.”
Her love of flowers, plants, and birds grew from an initial introduction by her aunt, “Bessie B” Garrett, in her 20s to her involvement with Virginia Bluebird Society, Southside Bird Club, and the Danville Garden Club many years later. A true champion of Eastern Bluebird conservation efforts, she served as the Pittsylvania County Coordinator for the Virginia Bluebird Society for many years and was most recently the Vice President - Education of the group. She developed the “Adopt-a-box” bluebird house program along the Riverwalk Trail in Danville, which has fledged thousands of bluebirds over the years.
Vickie loved every minute she could spend with her family and with the birth of her grandchild, Emma Kate Gardner, she easily stepped into the role of “Grandma Vivi” and all the fun they would have baking, gardening, visiting the science center, and more.
Above all, she wanted her life to be a testimony of God’s love through her. She embodied the Proverbs 31 woman – watching over her husband, children, and household. Although our heart breaks that she is no longer with us, we rejoice in knowing that on February 21, 2023, she was welcomed into the presence of the Lord. “Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring praise to her at the city gates.” – Proverbs 31:31
In addition to her husband, children, and sister, she is survived by her brother, Leonard Allen, brother-in-laws - Joseph Borup, James Fuquay, and David Fuquay, sister-in-law - Joyce Fuquay, several nieces and nephews, and special cousin – Margaret Motley (Philip). She is predeceased by her parents, sister-in-law – Beth Jane Daniels Fuquay, nephew – Lee Fuquay, and niece – Raelyn Allen.
