Vernell R. Cassada, 83 of 110 Vine Circle, Danville, VA died on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Pittsylvania County on December 27, 1931 to the late Oscar M. Cassada and Elsie D. Cassada. He retired from Thalhimers and Macys Department stores after 33 years of service. He was a member of Rock Springs United Methodist Church holding many positions. He was a 1950 graduate of Dan River High School. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. He loved working in his yard and garden where he loved to share the fruits of his labor. He was a member of Danville Master Gardeners, Danville Sertoma Club and served his country in the United States Navy. On July 6, 1957 he married the former Thelma Ferguson Cassada who predeceased him on April 3, 2014. He is survived by his daughter Sharon K. Cassada; his sister- in- law, Ruth F. Scearce and her husband R. W. Scearce, Jr.; his brother -in-law, Maynard Ferguson and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Joel B. Cassada, Sr. Funeral services will be held at Townes Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Steve Weedling officiating . Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Rock Springs U M Church Building Fund c/o 2080 Brumfield Road Keeling, VA 24566 or your favorite charity. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Cassada family.
