Vera Gray Stephens 93, of 131 Confederate Ave. Danville Va died peacefully on Monday afternoon at Roman Eagle Memorial Home surrounded by her loving family. Vera was born March 31, 1931, in Moriah, NC. She was a daughter of the late Herman Wilson Gray and Leona Oakley Gray. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William Buford Stephens, a son Bill Stephens, 2 brothers Harold Gray and Bobby Gray, 2 sisters Lola Poteat and Hazel Coleman.
She is survived by a daughter Anne Stephens (Andy Pickeral of Danville), a son Thomas E Stephens (Rhonda) of Ringgold, one granddaughter Ali Stephens-Pickeral (Justin Knick/fiancé), a brother Ernest Gray and a sister Janie Coleman, a special son, Rick Metcalf, as well as many special nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Stephens grew up on a tobacco farm and later moved to Danville Virginia and began her career with FW Woolworth. She retired after 33 years of service. She loved to cook for the family and was known for the many great dishes she prepared for her family and friends. Vera was a faithful member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and served in many different capacities while there.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday December 5, 2024, by Reverend Penny Rasnake at 2pm at Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main St, Danville Va with interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home from 1-2pm prior to the service and at other times at the residence.
