Tony I. Benazzi of Danville, Va. died on Monday, December 10, 2012, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He was born on Patton Street in 1920 to his parents, Tony I. Benazzi Sr. and Effie Burch Benazzi. He was predeceased by his sister Vivian Benazzi Matthews. Tony was well known in local sports circles prior to volunteering in the U.S. Army in World War II. He served in New Caledonia, New Guinea and took part in the invasions of Leyte and Luzon in the Philippines. In 1950, Tony joined his uncle, Joe Benazzi at Billy's Place Restaurant on Patton St where he made many friends. After his uncle's death, he continued to run "Billy's Place" until he retired in 1983. He was married nearly 50 years to Doris Allen Benazzi who passed away in 2002. He is survived by his loving daughters, Susan Redd of Atlanta, Gayle Kaplan of Southold, NY, and Nancy Crane of Hampton. Papa Tony was adored by his 4 grandchildren; Leah, Isaac, Josh and Jake. He leaves 3 great grandchildren, Mohini, Dorothy and Micah. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home from 7:00-8:30 pm on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. A graveside service will be held at Highland Burial Park, on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 10:30 am with Dr. Charles Scearce officiating.
