Timothy Hooker

July 13, 1943 — April 12, 2017

Dr. Timothy Huntington Hooker met his Savior face to face at 5:45 pm on Monday, December 4, 2017. He was born on July 13, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Dr. John Williams Hooker and Mary Lillian Norris Hooker. Tim was a 1961 graduate of George Washington High School where he was on the football and wrestling teams. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1966 from the University of Richmond and his MD from the Medical College of Virginia in 1970. He served his country in the U.S. Army while completing an Internship and Residency in Pediatrics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He also served at Fort Ord, California, and Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii before being discharged with the rank of Major.      Tim returned to Danville in 1978 to re-marry his beloved Judy after they had been divorced for 7 years. Once he returned to Southside Virginia, he began his medical career along Highway 58, working in various Emergency Departments and Public Health Clinics. In 1979, he would begin working in the office of Dr. Ben Judy in Clarksville, VA. In 1984, Tim and Judy would return to Danville and see a dream realized when they opened the first urgent care clinic in the area. On October 23, 1984, Immediate Care opened and would continue to serve, care for, and heal the sick for nearly 23 years. Dr. Hooker was blessed to have Dr. Glen Bond and Dr. Dennis Robinson as his colleagues and friends. He also had an amazing support staff of nurses and office personnel that ran the office, including his wife Judy who was the Office Manager.      As a young boy, Tim's love for the outdoors was born. He joined the Boy Scouts and learned to love the wilderness. He loved hiking, camping, and making a good bonfire to roast marshmallows for smores. He loved the Appalachian Trail and for years volunteered with its upkeep. In 1960, Tim earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Since 1955, his family has had a home on Buggs Island Lake. Countless hours were spent in and around the water sinking money into boats and other necessary play things. In his prime, he was an avid swimmer and water-skiier. Sailing, pontoon riding, and eagle watching carried him over into middle age. Every second he could steal away from Danville to Buggs Island, he did. He was fortunate enough to retire on the lake for ten years.      Tim was also involved in his churches and community. He had served as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church and Clarksville Presbyterian Church. He gave of  his time and talents to the GWHS Football Team, the Free Clinic of Danville, Hughes Home, Danville Speech and Hearing, and the Jail Ministry. He prayed with and for his patients.      Tim is survived by his wife of almost 40 years Judy Haley Hooker of 243 Parkview Place, Danville, VA, 24541. Left to cherish his memory are his three children: Melanie L. Hooker of Danville, Kristen L. Hooker of Richmond, VA, and John H. Hooker and his wife Kathleen Shea Hooker of Bristow, VA, along with his precious grandchildren Jack and Charlotte. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Daniel N. Hooker and his wife Sharon Tarpley Hooker of Chapel Hill, NC, and his nephews Dr. M. Sean Hooker and Stefan H. Hooker and their families. He is also survived by his uncle, Colonel Retired William H. Norris of Albuquerque, NM. Tim will also be missed by his large and loving extended Haley family.      A memorial service will be held Friday, December 8, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 937 Main Street, with the Rev. Paul Johnson presiding. Visitation with the family will be held Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at 432 Hawthorne Drive, the home of Judy's sister, Terri Haley Hall.      In lieu of  flowers, please make charitable contributions to the Free Clinic of Danville, 133 South Ridge Street, Danville, VA, 24541, or at www.danvillefreeclinic.com.
