On November 26, 2012, following an illness of ten days, Thornton Wilson Chaney, Sr. of 1320 Cedar Road, Ringgold, VA, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mr. Chaney was attended by his lovely wife of 69 years, Lura Gibson Chaney and other relatives and friends. He was born to Alex C. Chaney and Sally Parson Chaney on May 10, 1923. Mr. Chaney proudly served in the US Navy during World War II, and lived his entire 89 years within a one mile radius of the Mountain Hill community of Pittsylvania County. Upon returning from the service, Mr. Chaney owned and operated Chaney's Store, providing groceries and all types of farming supplies to his neighbors. Being a proud farmer himself, Mr. Chaney knew their needs well. Thornton and Lura were especially known for their delicious country sausage. Mr. Chaney took part in many civic events and was compassionate to those in need. He attended Christian Fellowship Center Church of God where he was a charter member. In addition to his wife, Lura of the home, he is survived by one sister, Sally Chaney Lee; a brother, Edward Wayne Chaney and his wife, Joyce; his loving grandchildren, Thornton (Tony) Chaney, III, Wendy Chaney Morgan, Elizabeth Chaney, David Alan Chaney, II, and Matthew Chaney; and great-grandchildren, Haley and Andrew Dodson and Lucas Chaney. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Barksdale Chaney, Alex Chaney, Jr. and Randolph Chaney. He was also predeceased by two sons, Thornton W. Chaney, Jr., survived by Susan Reed Chaney, and David Alan Chaney, survived by Martha King Chaney. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 2:00 PM, from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Neal Isom and the Reverend Greg Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence, 1320 Cedar Road. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Chaney family.
