Thomas William “Tom” Leggett, Jr. passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 4, 2017. He was born on December 8, 1944 in Richmond, VA, a son of the late Thomas William Leggett, Sr. and Margaret Seay Leggett. On December 17, 1967, he married his high school sweetheart, the former Elizabeth “Betty” Wright. Tom was a graduate of Park View High School, South Hill, VA and earned a degree in Civil Engineering at Virginia Military Institute. He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed at K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Marquette, MI for 4 years. Tom moved to Danville in 1971 and began a career with P. L. Anderson and Son. At the time of his passing he was owner and operator. He was also an engineering consultant for the Danville Goodyear Plant. He was an active member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and served on numerous committees, including chairman of the Usher Committee. Tom was an Eagle Scout and was very active in the Scouting Program at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. He was Past-President and Board Member of the Danville Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. As an active member of the Rotary Club, he was instrumental in the placement of the American Flags at the Field of Honor located at the corner of Main St. and Memorial Dr. Tom was Past-President, Board Member, and Honorary Life Member of the Danville Life Saving Crew and felt honored to serve this fine organization in this capacity, as well as serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Danville Area Training Center. He served on the Board of Directors of Grove Park Pool and was honored with a life-time membership. Tom was an avid sports fan and supported community sports. You could find him at a Danville Braves Game and sporting events at Averett University, George Washington High School and Tunstall High School. In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by a sister, Sara Jane Leggett. He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Mark Wright Leggett of Danville and Thomas William Leggett, III of Richmond, VA; a sister, Jeanne Leggett Dwyer of Myrtle Beach, SC ; a niece, Katie Dwyer and a nephew, Keith Dwyer. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 8, 2017 at 4 pm at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bart Fletcher officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
