Thelma Alverson

Thelma Smith Alverson, 97, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on Sept 6, 2024 after a sudden decline. She was born February 23, 1927 to Lee Roy Smith and Bertie Harris Smith in Muscadine Alabama. The family relocated to Danville Virginia in 1938 when she was 11 years old. Thelma married Charles Henry Alverson, Jr on March 8, 1947 and they had 4 children. Charles Henry Alverson, III "Chuck" (Debora Alverson), Richard Kent Alverson (Mercy Alverson), Beverley Lynne Alverson, and Robyn Alverson Patzke (William Patzke).

She worked at Danville Switchboard as a Telephone Operator when she was young, and then later Dan River Mills for 25 years. She was a member of Mosley Memorial Methodist Church and later transferred to Fairview Methodist Church. She read her Bible daily, she was a woman of great faith and a woman of substance.

She loved her home, cooking, flowers, watching sunsets, picnics, traveling, shopping, coffee and singing songs she made up very badly. Her greatest love was spending time with her family, she was the happiest when everyone was together. She had 5 grandchildren: Jennifer Alverson Metcalf (Ignacio Metcalf), Derek Foster Alverson (Ann Alverson), Mandy Burkett Niehaus McCaughey (Chris McCaughey), Ryan Michael Alverson (Liz Alverson), and Chelsea Alverson Folmsbee (Heath Folmsbee). And she was blessed with 10 great grandchildren: Childress Alverson, Cassidy Metcalf, Clorie Metcalf, Chase Niehaus, Connley Niehaus, Cutler Niehaus, Cora Folmsbee, Hazel Folmsbee, Ellie Alverson and Beckett Alverson.

She is predeceased by both parents, her sisters Peggy Wright and Imogene Franklin, her husband, "Charlie", and all of her inlaws, whom she always loved dearly. She had so many of her loved ones waiting for her to arrive in her heavenly home.

Townes Funeral Home in Danville VA is entrusted with her funeral arrangements. Funeral Service will be on Saturday September 14, 2024, at 11:00 am at Townes Funeral Home 215 West Main Street Danville, VA and burial at Danville Memorial Gardens on 58 West in Danville VA.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Danville Life Saving Crew.
