Mrs. Sylvia Johnson South, age 76 of 222 Oak Creek Drive died Saturday, December 13, 2014 at her residence after a battle of five years with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born in Danville on October 8, 1938, a daughter of the late Thelbert Johnson and Helen Freeman Williams. Sylvia was retired as an aerobics instructor with the City of Danville for over forty years. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Danville Golf Club. She attended First Baptist Church for many years. Sylvia was a graduate of Whitmell Farm Life School and had taken art classes at Averett University. She was a talented artist, interior decorator and seamstress. On June 8, 1961 she married Ralph Wheeler South who survives of the home. She and Ralph were married fifty-three happy and wonderful years. Besides her husband Sylvia is survived by three children; Randall South, Kelly Barnett and Peyton South all of Danville, grandchildren, Jessica Barnett and Dylan South both of Danville, one brother, Garnett Johnson, Danville, one sister, Teressa Hedrick, Danville and one half-brother, Mark Johnson of Georgia. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. from First Baptist Church with the Reverend John Carroll officiating. It was the request of Sylvia that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapter, 308 Craghead Street Suite 104, Danville, VA 24541. The family will receive friends at the residence, 222 Oak Creek Drive. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street is serving the South family.
