Stuart Laurens Craig, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died Saturday, October 24, 2015. He was born on August 3, 1926, the son of the late Mary de Saussure Craig and Dr. Stuart Lessley Craig in New York, New York. Stuart was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School, Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School. On August 19, 1950 he married the former Eleanor Spencer. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Pamela Alexander and her friend, Douglas McBride; his son, David Craig and his wife, Allison; and his daughter-in-law Kristine Craig. He also is survived by grandchildren, Lauren Alexander; Bevin Craig Alexander; Lessley Craig and her friend, Jake Swafford; Sarah Dickson, and her husband, Trent and Hunter Craig; his brother-in-law, Robert Spencer; and several nieces and nephews. Stuart was predeceased by his son, Stuart L. Craig Jr.; and sister, Jeanne Craig Davis. Following law school, Stuart practiced law in New York City with Cahill, Gordon, Reindel & Ohl before coming to Danville with Eleanor where he joined the law firm of Clement, Wheatley, Winston & Craig. He served as a judge in the 22nd Circuit of Virginia for 10 years before joining the law firm of Carter, Craig & Bass. He retired in December 2002 after devoting 50 years to the law. Stuart enjoyed traveling extensively in the United States, Canada and many foreign countries with his wife, Eleanor. His other interests included photography, golf, music, reading, and attending races at Virginia International Raceway. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 781 Main Street, Danville, Va. with the Reverend Rebecca Crites and the Reverend James Mathieson officiating. Burial will be held at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 160 Brockton Place, Danville, Va.
