Stavros Calos

September 14, 1925 — September 4, 2014

Stavros Efstratiou Calos, born Stavros Efstratiou Kaliafentakis but better known as Stabby Calos, died on April 9, 2014 at Danville Regional Medical Center after receiving visits from loved ones from Virginia and North Carolina. Mr. Calos was born in Danville, VA on September 14, 1925 to Efstraious Konstantiou Kaliafentaskis and Anna Maurakis Kaliafentakis, recent immigrants from Crete. Although not expected to live as an infant, he lived a full and happy eighty-eight years, including sixty-six years with the love of his life, Margaret Alice Dobbins of High Point, NC whom he married on December 28, 1947. The couple had four children, Steve Calos of Richmond, VA, Linda Sadler (Henry) of Greensboro, NC, Laurie Dishman (Steve) of Danville, and Lisa Salita (Adrian) of Richmond, Va, as well as eight grandchildren: Russell Dishman (Dana), Anna Dishman Sargent (Thomas), Sarah Sadler, Stavros Calos, Maria Sadler, Margaret Irina Calos, Michael Salita, and Helen Salita. In recent years the family grew to include three great-grandsons, Gus Dishman, Sam Dishman, and Nicholas Sargent. He is survived also by a brother, Pete Calos of Hopewell VA, a sister- and brother-in-law, Helen Younts and J.D. Dobbins, both of High Point NC, several generations of nieces and nephews of the Calos and Dobbins families, and other relatives in the US, Canada, and Greece. Mr. Calos was predeceased by his parents, as well as two brothers, Gus Calos and James Calos, both of Danville, and a sister, Stella Morris of Richmond, VA. An excellent student at George Washington High School, Mr. Calos chose at age fourteen to work full time at the family business, Coney Island Lunch, and to care for his younger siblings, following the death of a parent. Following his decades at Coney Island, Mr. Calos became well known as a local wedding and sports photographer. Mr. Calos was known for his kindness, positive outlook, encouragement, and enthusiasm. Never saying that he felt anything other than great, he said many times that he would not have changed anything in his life. The family requests that friends and family members honor the memory of Mr. Calos by performing acts of kindness for another person. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Fairview United Methodist Church with Reverend Kathleen Monge officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Fairview United Methodist Church. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Calos family.
