Shirley Duncan

December 31, 1969 — May 17, 2022

Shirley Anne Grogan Duncan of Lebanon, OH passed away on May 17, 2022 at the age of 92. Born in Danville, VA, she was the daughter of the late Frank Thomas Grogan, Sr. and Eva Mae Travis Grogan. A graduate of George Washington High School, Shirley received an Associate Degree from Averett College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Longwood College, a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Virginia and also attended the University of New Mexico. She retired from the Danville City Public School System in 1988 with thirty-five years of service. A devoted member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church since 1937, Shirley served in many capacities through the years. Prior to moving to Ohio in 2013, she was a member of the Wednesday Club, Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and H, S, & Co. Rug Hooking Guild. Being an avid gardener, she belonged to Brookside and Forest Hills Garden Clubs and absolutely loved Historic Garden Week in Virginia every April. Shirley taught decoupage classes, and along with her husband, Fred, made and sold painted folk art and hand-woven baskets as Country Accents. In Ohio, Shirley was a member of Miami Valley Rug Hooking Guild, TWIG 10 (a benevolent group for Dayton Children’s Hospital), United Methodist Women of Faith, Knit Wits, and enjoyed participating in many craft classes and social events. In March 2022, she was the featured artist at Otterbein’s Creative Arts Department where thirty-seven of her beautiful hand-hooked rugs were on display. Shirley loved a good book and kept the local librarian hopping to find ones that she hadn’t yet read. Shirley leaves so many wonderful friends and will be remembered fondly for her giving and kind nature, thoughtfulness, and love of people. The saying “she loved life and it loved her right back” applies so well to her. Survivors are her daughter, Robin Duncan Hasty (Andy) of Waynesville, OH, two grandsons Taylor Duncan Hasty (Rachael) of Lexington, SC and Brian Andrew Hasty (Eryn) of Fredericksburg, VA, one great-grandson (Landen), three great-granddaughters (Blakeney, Raleigh, and Harper). Also, her sister, Nancy Grogan Pittman of Brandon, MS, niece Holly Pittman Turner (Dan), nephews Richard Green Grogan (Marcia), Frank Thomas Grogan, III (Cathy), William Lacey Pittman, and Robert William Duncan, Jr. (Beth). In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her high school sweetheart and beloved husband of seventy years, Frederick (Fred) Henry Duncan, Jr. Also, two brothers, Travis Linwood Grogan and Frank Thomas Grogan, Jr., and a sister, Dorothy Grogan King. A memorial service will be held at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church on June 11, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Jae Cho officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 12:30 to 2:00 and would greatly appreciate the wearing of masks. A private interment will be held at Mountain View Cemetery following the service.
