Samuel Thompson

September 25, 1937 — June 9, 2016

Samuel Thomas Thompson, 78, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday. September 6, 2016 at Duke University Hospital after a six year fight with cancer.      Sam was born in Pittsylvania County, VA on September 25, 1937, a son of the late Johnny and Hester Richie Thompson.      He was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Pelham, NC and retired from Lowes after 23 years of service.      Sam is survived by his wife, Edna Jones Thompson; a daughter Teresa Lakey and husband Robert; granddaughters, Megan and Robin (Jake); and a brother, William Thompson (Loretta).      In addition to his parents, Sam was predeceased by four brothers and five sisters.      Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jason Gaskin officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.      The family will receive friends Friday at Townes Funeral Home from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence.      Memorial donations may be sent to Bethel United Methodist Church, c/o Kay Satterfield, 6258 Park Springs Road, Pelham, NC 27311 or the Danville Cancer Association, , 223 Riverview Drive, Suite J, Danville, VA  24541
