Samuel Adams

Born August 17, 1929 in Danville, Va. Prior to his high school years, he lived in the Mt. Hermon community on his father's tobacco farm. After moving into Danville, he graduated from George Washington High School in 1948. He was active in Boy Scouts, obtaining Eagle rank, and highlighted by a two-man canoe trip down the Dan from Danville to Albemarle Sound. He attended the World Scout Jamboree in France in 1947. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1952 with a degree in Forestry and entered the US Air Force to become a fighter pilot. He spent 3 years in England with NATO forces flying the F-86 fighter interceptor and F-84F fighter bomber. He was discharged from the Air Force Reserve in 1960 with the rank of Captain. He graduated from Columbia University in 1958 with an MBA. He worked managing various manufacturing plants for Burlington Industries in North Carolina and later Crompton Company in Waynesboro, VA. He came back to farming in Pittsylvania County in 1981. He was a tree farmer, outdoorsman, and bird hunter until there were no more quail left in the county, and never too excited about hunting pen-raised birds which could barely fly. He and his wife traveled often, visiting all the continents save Antarctica. He is predeceased by his sister Suzanne Adams Hill and their parents Samuel Tarpley Adams and Velina Tinsley Adams. He is survived by his wife Anne of the home, two sons Samuel Tarpley Adams III of Roswell GA and Robert Horton Adams of Dry Fork VA. There are seven grandchildren Robert Joshua Adams, Tinsley Anne Adams, Samuel Bennett Adams, Alexander Tarpley Adams, William Carrier Adams, Lucas James Adams, and Jewellen Faye Adams. There is one great-granddaughter Samantha Cathryn Adams. Visitation will be at Townes Funeral Home in Danville on Saturday November 2 from 2:00 - 3:30 followed by the graveside service at 4:00 in the Highland Burial Park.
