Ruth Christie Newton, of Danville VA, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center. Ruth was born September 19, 1925 in Hartford CT., to the late Ruth and Stewart Christie. Ruth was a founding member of the Bloomfield CT, Federation of Women's Club as well as the East Lyme Federation of Women's Club. She was President of American Legion Auxiliary Post 128 in Niantic CT, for several terms. Ruth was the owner of Bloomfield Stenographic Services, where she offered work study programs for Bloomfield High School Students. Ruth will be fondly remembered for her entrepreneurial spirit, her perpetual optimism, her love of teaching others to knit and the stories she passionately shared of her worldly travels. Ruth was married to Richard "Bud" Newton, who predeceased her in December 2014, for 67 years, they resided in Niantic CT for 35 years before moving to Danville in 2006. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Walker (Garland) of Danville VA, Suzanne Brosnan (Robert) of Sarasota FL, and Barbara Newton of New Britain CT, Granddaughter, Christie Van Pelt (Joey), Great Grandson Alexander Van Pelt of Danville VA, and brother in law Arthur Polstein, along with many special nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister Maryann Christie Polstein. In lieu of flowers donations can be to Fairview United Methodist Church, 1013 Westover Drive, Danville, VA 24541. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 28, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Kathleen Monge officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home chapel one hour before the service and at other times will be at the residence of her daughter Elizabeth Walker (Garland) at 210 James Road. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Newton family.
