Roy Nelson

December 31, 1938 — September 2, 2019

Roy “Billy” William Nelson peacefully entered his eternal home on February 9, 2019 with his family by his side.      Born in Danville on December 31, 1938 to the late Josie Prather Nelson and George W. Nelson.  Billy was a kind soul and gentle man, never having a harsh word for anyone.     Upon graduation, Billy worked for Dan River, Inc., the city of Danville, Sunoco-Rich Petroleum and retired from Abercrombie Oil Company.  Billy was a member of Stateline Baptist Church for  many years, serving in a number of capacities and later became a member of Dan River Church where he loved Pastors Scott and Todd.      Billy was a devoted son, brother, faithful and loving husband, father and grandfather.  He enjoyed working in his yard, fishing at Atlantic Beach with his friends, attending Ballou Park Senior Dance, traveling and his church.      His grandsons Taylor and Hunter Nelson were his pride and joy.  His four legged buddies Bojangles and Angus will surely miss Papa.      Surviving Billy are his wife of 60 years, Virginia Austin Nelson; a son, James Steven Nelson; a brother, Leonard Lee Nelson; 3 nieces, Donna Gibson, Tammy Anderson, and Lisa Rankin and a host of other family and friends.  In addition to his parents, Billy was predeceased by a son, William Jeffrey Nelson.      Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 11 am at Dan River Church.  Burial will follow in the Nelson Family Cemetery on Luna Lake Road.      The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7:00-8:30 pm and at other times will be at the residence.
