Robert Walker

July 18, 1956 — September 30, 2016

Alan Walker (1956-2016) Robert Alan Walker of Richmond Virginia passed away September 30, 2016. He was born on July 18, 1956 in Danville Virginia to Daniel T. Walker, Sr. of Reidsville and Lois C. Walker, deceased.    Alan graduated George Washington High School in 1974 and attended VCU in Richmond, Va. He received his Associate in Applied Science in Business Computer Programming in 1989 from Rockingham Community College. In 1996 he started working with the Virginia Retirement System and remained there until his retirement.    His passion was friends, art and music. Richmond was where he made his home with his family of friends. During his years at GWHS (1971 – 1974) he drew the eagle that continues to serve as the mascot symbol for the high school and he shared his humor in the high school newspaper through his Castaway comic strip. His art is all over the country. As he traveled, he drew. He used his drawings to express his emotions and views of life and gave himself unselfishly. In 2006, after recovering from quadruple bypass surgery, he drew his impression of his surgery and gave it to his doctor.    Along his life journey Alan was a survivor, traveling across country without money or a place to stay. Coast to coast he went. He never met a stranger and always treated others the way he wanted to be treated. He was a free spirit and always enjoyed engaging in verbal battles of wits or a philosophical discussion.    He is survived by his father, Daniel T Walker, Sr. of Reidsville, NC.; brothers Daniel T Walker Jr. of Greensboro, NC, and William H. Walker of Apex, NC; his sister in-law Linda Walker; 5 nieces and nephews; and a devoted group of friends. His love for Richmond and his family of friends was home to Alan and he was truly blessed by the love they shared with him.    Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 12:00 noon at Townes Memorial Chapel, 215 West Main Street, Danville, Va. 24541 with the Reverend Charles Wickham officiating. The family will receive friends and guests at 11:30 AM.    The family respectfully requests that no flowers be sent and prefers any memorial contributions be made to Rockingham Community College.
