Robert D. "Bob" Fowlkes died Friday, January 3, 2014 in the Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after a decline in health. He was born on January 3, 1932 in Danville, VA to the late Albert Rosser Fowlkes, Sr. and Mary Kathryn Smith Fowlkes. Bob graduated from George Washington High School in 1952 and from Virginia Tech in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He earned his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Virginia in 1962. He was employed with the Pittsylvania County School system for a number of years. His career included teacher and Assistant Principal of Whitmell Farm Life School 1956-1964, Assistant Principal of Tunstall High School 1964-1965, Principal of Callands Elementary School 1965-1967, Principal of Glenwood Elementary School 1967-1986 and Principal of Kentuck Elementary School from 1986 until his retirement in 1990. After retirement Bob worked part time under the early incentive retirement program until 1995. Bob was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church and served on numerous committees, church council and participated in the LOGOS program for the youth in the church. He joined Trinity United Methodist Church and later moved his membership back to Ascension Lutheran Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Patsy Huffman Fowlkes on October 26, 2010. Bob was also predeceased by two brothers, Rosser Fowlkes, Jr. and Dorsey Fowlkes and a sister, Kathryn Turner. Bob is survived by three step children, Michael Huffman (Cynthia) of Danville, Kim H. Bumgarner of South Hill, VA and Paul F. Huffman (Jill) of Boone, NC; seven step grandchildren, Lori H. Austin (Mark), Amber H. Echols (Seth), Joshua Bumgarner, Amy, Jared, Will and Mary Kate Huffman and step great grandchildren, Madison Austin, Brady Austin and Grayson Huffman. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 6, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Townes Funeral Home with the Reverend Meredith Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home.
