Robert Fields

March 24, 1932 — January 30, 2015

Robert "Bob" Travis Fields of Danville, Va., died Friday, January 30, 2015 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born March 24, 1932, in Danville, VA to the late Frances Travis Fields and Robert Keith Fields. He was preceded in death by an older brother Robert Keith Fields, Jr. who died in infancy. Bob graduated from George Washington High School and Virginia Tech. After college, he went to the Air Force and later to the Air Force Reserve where he attained the rank of Captain. After active duty he returned to Dan River Mills to work as an industrial engineer. He and his family moved many times during his working career, but he eventually became a management consultant. Later in life he taught in a private school for two years and later became a real estate appraiser. When his parents' health began to fail, he and his family moved to Danville to care for his parents until their deaths. He was of the Methodist faith. He is survived by his former wife, Shirley Tucker Fields of Greensboro, NC. From his first marriage, he is survived by Robert Travis Fields, Jr. and wife Cindy of Anchorage, Alaska, Vivian Fields Shambley and husband Terry of Burlington, NC, and twins Darron Keith Fields and wife Lori of Pleasant Gardens, NC, and Sharon Fields Whiting and husband Nick of Matthews, NC. Survivors also include his wife Wanda Jaynes Fields and their son, John Taylor Fields and wife, Jessica Fields of the home. In addition he is survived by eleven grandchildren Serena Fields of Anchorage, Alaska; Ashleigh S. Roby and husband Pat of Greensboro, NC, Brandon Keith Shambley of Greensboro, NC; Chandler and Cassidy Fields of Pleasant Gardens, NC; Elizabeth Fields of Greenville, NC; Madison and Sarah Whiting of Matthews, NC; Andrew Minter, Taylor Fields, and Sierra Fields of the home in Danville, VA. In his later years, he completed the crossword puzzle and Sudoku from the newspaper each day. After he bought a touch screen laptop, he enjoyed playing "Words with Friends" with his children and following the activities of his children and grandchildren on Facebook. Anytime, he enjoyed watching all sports on television and particularly, Virginia Tech sports, no matter if they won or lost. Another of his interests included watching Fox News and sharing his political point of view with his family. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 with a celebration of life at 4:00 PM in the Townes Memorial Chapel with Reverend Joe Northen officiating. At other times the family will be at their residence. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Danville Humane Society in honor of his faithful friend and guard Max. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Fields family.
