Peggy Eanes Smith of Danville, VA. joined her late husband, Thomas Andrew Smith, in their eternal home on high Thursday, January 14, 2021. She passed away in the comfort of her own home surrounded by her family and loved ones. Peggy was born in Martinsville, VA. on June 1, 1932 to the late Harold Clifford Eanes and Ruth Bray Eanes. Peggy was a proud alumna of Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia, where she cultivated her sharp wit as well as lifelong friendships. Throughout her life, she had many responsibilities, but of those, the most important was being Mother, which she was endearingly referred to by her daughters. Peggy was a devoted member of First Baptist Church and a longstanding pillar within the local bridge community. She is survived by her two daughters, Gail Ann Smith of Kernersville, NC and Judy Smith Cox of Danville, VA; her two grandchildren, Anne Penn Cox and her partner, Nicholas Argyrakis of Livingston, Montana and Andrew Jones Cox of Bozeman, Montana; her nieces and nephews, Nina Robinson Stowe of Elon College, NC, George Frazier Robinson, III of Greensboro, NC, Angela Robinson Lewis of McKinney, TX, Adriane Connerton of Brooklyn, NY, Stephen Payne of Alexandria, VA, Dorian P. Sylvester of Greensboro, NC, and predeceased R. Andrew Payne of Raleigh, NC. To those who knew her well, Peggy was a special soul, full of love, kindness, and joy. This was evidenced by her always putting others' needs above her own. Her laughter and positive energy was infectious. Family was the most important thing to her, and she reminded everyone of that whenever she could. Peggy's love for those around her was endless, and the world will continue to see her through her two daughters, two grandchildren, four nieces, and three nephews. The world is a better, more joyous place because of Peggy, and her spirit will certainly live on. A private graveside service will be held at Westminster Gardens Cemetery in Greensboro, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Mountain Valley Hospice at 730 East Church Street, Suite 13, Martinsville, VA 24112.
