Pamela Bernard Ayuso, age 66, of 143 Canterbury Road, died Sunday, August 5, 2018 in the Duke Hock Family Pavilion, Durham, NC. She was born on March 19, 1952 in Danville, VA, a daughter of James Clifton Bernard, Jr. and Doris Cress Bernard. She had lived all but 3 years of her life in Danville, when she lived in Madrid, Spain, and was a graduate of George Washington High School and Stratford College. Pam was a Spanish teacher with the Pittsylvania County Schools for 32 years, and simultaneously taught at Danville Community College for 22 years and Averett University for 5 years. She was a member of West Main Baptist Church. She was also past state Treasurer of the Foreign Language Association of Virginia (FLAVA), member of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), past President of The Pilot Club, and past member of The Wednesday Club. She was also affiliated with the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF). She is survived by one son, Chuck Ayuso (Melissa); a sister, Robin Bernard Gillie; one grandchild, Sarah; and two nieces, Cress Gillie and Heather Gillie. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Heather Gillie, 126 Hawthorne Drive. The family gives their gratitude to the staff of Duke Hospital ICU and to the staff of Hock Family Pavilion inpatient hospice facility for the outstanding care given to Pam during her last days.
