He started his worldly life on July 10, 1927 in Abingdon, VA, when he was born to Clarence Henry Hill and Rosa Helton Hill. Newton, (affectionately known as Curly), was predeceased by his wife, Cynthia Keatts Hill; grandson Jason Lee Moore; brothers, Curtis Hill and James Hill and sisters, Nannie Mae Keatts and Mabel Cross. He is survived by his daughters Carolyn Hill Haley (Bill) and Rita Hill Moore; a son, David Anthony Hill; grandchildren, Carabae Jones, of Salem, VA, Christina Jones Flippen (Steve), of Dry Fork, VA, Darren Moore (Amy), of Chatham, VA and granddaughter-in-law, Mollie Moore, of Ruffin, NC; seven great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; brothers, Douglas Hill and Raymond Hill and sisters Mary Keatts, Ernestine Crabb and Kathryn Young. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and loved the Lord with all his heart! Newton worked hard all his life as a carpenter and worked in many of the finer homes in and around Danville while employed at P. L. Anderson and Son Construction. Bluegrass and classic country music were his roots and his passion. His talent as a fiddle player won him numerous ribbons and recognitions. Weekends were spent playing music with family members, his many friends and fellow musicians at numerous barn dances, shows, radio programs and parties. Not only could he play the strings off a fiddle, he also mastered the guitar, mandolin and was a vocalist harmonizing to heart’s content. After retirement, he used his skills as a craftsman refurbishing, repairing and rebuilding string instruments. Some were damaged severely but looked and sounded perfect when he finished his tedious work. The Angel Band just gained a new member... We are all enriched by the life he lived! A simple graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, located at 1665 South Boston Road, Danville, VA 24540. In lieu of flowers, his family respectfully requests donations be made to God’s Pit Crew, 2499 North Main Street, Danville, VA 24540.
