Nelson Oliver Tate of 229 Belaire Drive passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015 in the Select Specialty Hospital, Greensboro, NC after a decline in health for the past several months. Born June 8, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, VA he was the son of the late Oliver M. Tate and Dora W. Tate. Nelson had been a resident of the Danville area since 1948 and retired from Dan River, Inc. in 1991. He was involved in many Senior Citizen Clubs including Dan River Senior Citizen Club, Ballou Senior Citizen Club, and River Oak V. I. P. He was a member of College Park Baptist Church where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, deacon and was deacon emeritus at the time of his passing. He also attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church. He served in the United States Army after World War II and was stationed in Japan. He was a graduate of Dan River High School and attended Danville Community College and Averett College. On June 28, 1948 he married Hazel T. Tate who passed away in 1999. On September 30, 2000 he married Bertha S. Tate who survives of the home. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a daughter, Kathy T. Gilbert and a brother, Toy L. Tate. In addition to his wife, Bertha, Nelson is survived by two sons, Nelson O. Tate, Jr. and his wife, June and Eugene A. Tate and his wife Wanda all of Danville; two step-sons, Jimmy Short and his wife Donna of Matthews, NC and Terry Short and his wife Debby of Fort Mills, SC; 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granchild; a sister Lois T. Dodson, and two brothers, Kenneth L. Tate and Roy G. Tate all of Danville. Funeral Services with Full Military Honors by American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Mausoleum Chapel at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Dr. CAM McIntire, the Reverend Archer McIntire and the Reverend Myron Bruce officiating. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, January 23 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm and at other times will be at the residence.
