Nancy Cocke

March 7, 1935 — July 26, 2016

Nancy "Nan" Simpson Cocke, 81, of Danville, VA, peacefully passed away Tuesday July 26, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center.    She was born in Gretna, VA on July 3, 1935 to the late Ferrell and Anne Simpson. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Delano S. Cocke. She is survived by two daughters, Beverly A. Cocke of Danville, VA; Jodie S. Cocke (Lorraine Cantolina) of Richmond, VA and one grandson, Frank W. Anderson, II of Richmond, VA.     She is survived by her sister, Ruby S. Slayton of Gwynn's Island, VA.  She is predeceased by her sister, Polly S. Cocke (Billy W. Cocke) of Richmond, VA and her brother Wallace D. Simpson (Lucy) of Bedford, VA.  She so loved her nieces and nephews who affectionately named  her "Naint Naincy".      Nancy received a Secretarial Degree from Averett College where she loved playing on the Women's Basketball Team.  She served early on as a bookkeeper for Lee's Drug Store and the YWCA to name a few, and was a substitute teacher at Tunstall High school while managing the area Elaine Powers Exercise Studio. More recently she was the Personnel Department Manager of Belk Leggett Department Store in Danville.     She enjoyed contributing to the community and served as a member of the Danville Business and Professional Women's Club and the International Management Council just to name a few.  She loved her time as a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.  She was a member of West Main Baptist Church.   Besides being an amazing wife, mother and grandmother, she loved playing golf, traveling, playing  piano and singing, laughing and telling jokes, and was a formidable bridge player.  She loved dances and parties with her close friends where she could "dress to the nines".  But, her time with family was her favorite, especially at Sunset Beach "standing on the edge of our nation!".       The family would like to thank Nan's special caregivers, Ann and Tameshia Stamps, and Vickie Pinchback, the nurses/CNAs at Roman Eagle on Garden Terrace, and the doctors and nurses on the 6th floor of Danville Regional Medical Center.   Funeral services will be held at West Main Baptist Church, 450 West Main Street Danville, VA 24541, at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 29th with Pastor Bruce Wilson officiating.  Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Thursday, July 28th from 6 until 8 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence of her daughter, Beverly A. Cocke, 212 Stratford Place.   In lieu of flowers donations can be made to American Heart Association or West Main Baptist Church.   Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street is serving the Cocke family.
