Mildred Gatewood Ferrell passed away Sunday, September, 29, 2013, at the age of ninety-nine. She was born on July 1, 1914 in Pelham, NC, the daughter of Louis Stokes Gatewood and Mary Sue Coleman Gatewood. Mrs. Ferrell had been a resident of Stratford House and later Stratford Rehabilitation Center since November of 1998. The family appreciates the care and concern expressed by the caregivers of both facilities. Prior to 1998, she lived on Clarendon Circle where she enjoyed her neighborhood friends. Mrs. Ferrell was married to William Herbert Ferrell on April 3, 1943. The couple lived in Texas during World War II, before returning to Danville in 1945. Mr. Ferrell passed away in 1991. Survivors include a niece, Lillian Sue Gatewood Shelton and husband Darrel, three great-nephews, James Ashworth of Danville, Daniel Shelton and his wife Lauren of Quito, Ecuador, their daughters, Nora and Lillian Shelton, and Ben Shelton and his wife Chelsea of Madison, NC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Lewis James Gatewood. Mrs. Ferrell was educated in the Danville Public Schools, was associated with L. Herman Department Store for sixteen years, and was later employed with the Virginia Tobacco Company. She was a life-long member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Other affiliations were the Joseph Gravely Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Beverstone Garden Club, and the Wednesday Club. Funeral Services will be held at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Barry Foster officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM prior to the service. At other times the family will be at 468 Harper Road, Dry Fork, VA. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Ferrell family.
