Mildred Watlington Farthing, of 921 Walters Mill Road Providence Road, Providence, NC, went home to
be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, November 25th, 2023, at the age of 81. She battled ALS for over a year.
She was born on April 19th, 1942. She was the daughter of the late Mary and Earlie Watlington.
Mildred married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Farthing, on November 25th, 1961. They celebrated
62 years of marriage the day she went to her heavenly home.
She is also survived by her daughter, Debbie Fowlkes (Frank); grandchildren, Ethan Fowlkes (Lauren) and Emily Hodges; great grandchildren, Cutler Fowlkes, and Dewey Hodges; and sister, Peggy Martin; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers; Wayne, Ray, and Earl (Pinchum) Watlington.
Mildred lived most of her life in Providence, North Carolina and was a faithful and dedicated member of
Shady Grove United Methodist Church, for over 60 years. She was an active member of the choir, taught
Sunday School, United Methodist women, Food Pantry, and served on the finance committee, until her
health failed.
One of Mildred's greatest loves was working in the Furniture store, helping people find the perfect piece
for their home. She began working at M&M Furniture store as a bookkeeper after graduating high
school. Mildred and Thomas would later own the business and successfully operate M&M Furniture.
They retired and closed the business in 2017.
Mildred enjoyed watching sports, especially college basketball and football, working in her yard, and
baking cakes. When she did take a trip, her favorite place was Blowing Rock.
"The most truly generous persons are those who give silently without hope of praise or reward." Mildred
was such a person. She had a givers heart. She desired that all praise and honor be given to her Lord.
Mildred found great joy in loving and spoiling her grandchildren. They were the apple of her eye.
Many thanks to Shady Grove United Methodist Church, The Tabernacle, AuthoraCare Hospice of Burlington, and Dr. Jim Caress and Nicole Smith, RN, with Wake Forest Bastist ALS Clinic.
