Mildred Collins Burton, 89 of Axton, died peacefully at her home, Wednesday, October 30, 2013. Mildred was born July 8, 1924 in Pittsylvania County to the late Charlie Cleveland, and Annie Warren Collins. She grew up on the Ferry Road in Danville. She graduate from Schoolfield High School in 1941. She married Thomas Dee Burton of Milton, NC December 21, 1942. They were married 54 years at the time of the his death. She was a homemaker, and stayed at home while her children were small. She worked at several textile manufacturing jobs, prior to following her dream of going back to school. She attended Danville Memorial Hospital School of Practical Nursing, and graduated in 1965. She retired in 1974, but remained active for many years. Mildred was a member of Carroll Memorial United Methodist Church, and enjoyed attending until her health began to fail. She enjoyed reading, and visits from family and friends. Two brothers, James S. Collins and Charles N. Collins, and one sister, Annie Laura Turner, also predeased Mrs. Burton. Two daughters survive her, Carolyn Kidd (Frank) of Moneta, VA, Marlyn Clifton (Jim "Pinky") of Axton. Two brothers, Ronald W. Collins (Jane) of Clarkesville, VA and Donald W. Collins (Louise) of Tempe, AZ. Sisters-in-law Edna Collins of Axton, and Joyce Collins of Mebane, NC. Grand/greatgrandchildren, Elizabeth Inman(Kenny) of Axton, Grace and Lucas Pryor of Axton, Burton Inman of Charlottesville, VA, Olivia Inman and Caleb Inman of Axton. Shannon Cox (Rachael) Brianna, Eli and Emma Cox of Rocky Mount, VA, Cori Fairchild (Lud) Noah and Luke of Moneta, VA, Nicholas Clifton of Charleston, SC and Sandra K. Bellamy (Eric) Lauren and Ethan of Keller, TX. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive Mildred. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 3 P.M. from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Anne Sisson officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friend at Townes Funeral Home on Sunday, November 3, 2013 from 1:30 to 3:00 P.M. and at other times will receive friends at the home. The family would like to thank Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for serving Mildred and her family in her last days.
