Michael Wayne Smith, age 60, passed away on Monday, August 28 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was the last child and only son born to Roger and Bertha Smith in Martinsville, Virginia on February 15, 1957. After graduating from Martinsville High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served our country honorably for four years. Ever the salesman, he used his talents in the insurance and real estate business for the remainder of his working life. He would tell you that his children, Christen Faatz (George) and Maz Smith (Christina), were his greatest accomplishment. He was overjoyed to meet his granddaughter, Lillian, just a few weeks prior to his passing. Mike was never without a giant cup of sweet tea in his hand, and some of his best times were spent coaching, especially Little League. He was a dedicated caretaker of his parents for many years. He loved old houses, antiquing, coupon clipping, late night talks with friends, his pups and playing the lottery. He was a diehard Tarheels fan. He is survived by his mother, children, granddaughter, two sisters and several nieces and nephews. Dad was like a cat with nine lives, having survived several heart attacks and health scares, therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Danville Rescue Squad who assisted him on many occasions. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 4 at 1 o’clock at Townes Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bruce Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service.
