Mr. Max C. Littlejohn of Danville died Monday, 11-24-14 at his daughter's residence in Mechanicsville, VA after being placed on hospice care. He had been in declining heath for several months. Mr. Littlejohn was born in Woodruff, SC on December 19, 1928, a son of the late Robert Arthur Littlejohn and Janie May Mason Littlejohn. He was married to the late Barbara Watlington Littlejohn who died March 9, 2010. Besides his parents and wife he was predeceased by three brothers, Bates, Wallace and Robin Littlejohn and nephew Robert Littlejohn. Mr. Littlejohn was a 1946 graduate of Schoolfield High School, graduate of Elon University in 1950 with AB degree in Physical Education. He was also a 1963 graduate of University of Virginia receiving a Master of Education. Mr. Littlejohn spent two years in the U. S. Army stationed in Alaska attaining the rank of Sgt. from 1950-1952. He spent 18 years in the Virginia National Guard and retired with the rank of Major. He was a member of the American Legion Post #325. Mr. Littlejohn retired from Pittsylvania County schools with 34 years of service in 1987. He was a classroom teacher, basketball, football and baseball coach. He had served as Principal at Climax High School for 12 years and 18 years as Principal at Chatham High School and 4 years at Renan Elementary School. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity, Member of the Chatham Lions Club with 18 years of service, Member of Chatham Baptist Church with 18 years of service and served on the Board of Deacons, Superintendent of Sunday School as well as Sunday School Teacher and Chairman 4 times. He later joined West Main Baptist Church and was a member for many years. He had taught life saving and swimming for five years and officiated at high school football for 8 years. He also loved golf and played when his health allowed. Surviving are his daughter; Ellen Littlejohn Randazzo and her husband Mathew J. Randazzo of Mechanicsville, grandchildren, Kathryn Littlejohn Randazzo and John Maxwell Randazzo. Also nephews, Steven and Tony Littlejohn and two grand-nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. from West Main Baptist Church with the Reverend Bruce Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Gretna Burial Park. Military honors will be presented in the church by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097 and the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, November 28, 2014 from 3 to 5 P.M. and 7 to 9 P.M. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street is serving the Littlejohn family.
