Matthew S. Scarce, known by many as Matt, passed away on Wednesday February 21st, 2024, in his hometown of Danville, Virginia. Matt was born on October 28th, 1986, to Michael C. Scarce and the late Sally L. Scarce.
Matt was a proud graduate of Old Dominion University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and multiple lifelong friends. Some of these friends described him as such:
“He was the embodiment of electricity. You could feel the joy in his words. His presence made you feel like he would shield you from the world’s ills.” - James
”Affectionately known to his friends by ‘Scarce’. He was someone who would put 100% into keeping friendships and relationships going. He would bring out the best in everyone he knew and would never shy away from competition.” - Marcos
”I think the nicest things to be said about Matt will never be spoken out loud. They’ll be thought about years from now, silently, in the minds of his students. But he should smile knowing he’s made a difference in so many lives.” - Andy
Matt was a teacher in Danville City Schools for the first 4 years of his career, then found his “home” at Twin Springs Elementary School in Pittsylvania County where he taught as a P.E. teacher for 9 years. As a teacher to all, he impacted the lives of many of his students not only through teaching, but by relating to them, being a big kid at heart himself. He was also an official with the Colonial Officials Association of Lynchburg, VA of which he officiated baseball, basketball, and football with his “crew”.
In 2016, Matt married the love of his life, Caitlyn Dishman, and together, they built a loving life of their own with their “fur babies” Bella, Lily, and Mac.
In addition to his wife, Matt is survived by his father Michael Scarce, sisters Kristen Scarce and Delana Lott, and multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Matt is predeceased by his mother Sally Scarce, and his grandparents Clyde Scarce and Elayne Scarce of Danville, Virginia and Beverly LaDage and Zenobia LaDage of Wilmington, Delaware.
There will be a Celebration of Life held on Saturday March 2nd, 2024, at 1:00pm at Townes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. There will be a “memory box” in honor of Matt. The family invites anyone who would like to bring items such as a written memory, student drawings, photographs, or other memorabilia to be placed in the box in honor of Matt.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Danville or Pittsylvania County Humane Societies.
