Mary Vardavas Dorsett, 97, passed away at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center Saturday, February 4, 2017. Mary was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada on September 19, 1919. Her parents Michael and Stamatia Marcus were from the island of Halki, Greece. Mary graduated from St. John High School and Modern Business College. She married Alex S. Vardavas on December 6, 1941, who predeceased her in January 1951. She is survived by one son, Alex S. Vardavas, Jr. Mary was employed by People’s Industrial Loan in January 1955, which evolved into People’s Bank in 1969, which later evolved into Carter Bank. She retired in August 1992 with almost 38 years of service. She then spent the balance of her life owning and operating the V-C Restaurant at the corner of Wilson and Lynn Streets. Mary was forced into retirement, at age 85, after undergoing open heart surgery. It was her warm smile, loving heart, kindness, honesty, and generosity for which she’ll always be remembered…not to mention the best mom a son could ever have, and the best cook! She was extremely dedicated to St. Peter’s Greek Orthodox Church, serving as organist for seemingly forever! It is requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the church in her memory at 116 Jefferson Ave., Danville, VA 24541. Her body rests at Townes Funeral Home where a special service will be held Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at 6 PM, at which time the family will also meet those who wish to express their memories and sympathies. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, February 9, from St. Peter’s Greek Orthodox Church with the Reverend Father Peter Rexinis officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
