Mary Swanson

Mary Alice Swanson of Danville, VA, died at Roman Eagle Nursing on May 4, 2024 after a long illness. Miss Swanson was born in Danville, VA, on September 17, 1945, a daughter of the late Samuel W. Swanson Sr., and the late Ruth Gatewood Swanson of Pittsylvania County.

She graduated from Callands High School and from Radford University with a bachelor’s degree. She was also a graduate of Hollins University with a master’s degree.

Mary Alice taught social studies for 32 years at Tunstall High School and retired in 2000. She had a huge library with books on each president, US Government, and places all over the world. The family donated her library to Tunstall’s library in her memory.

She enjoyed traveling throughout the world and gave programs on many subjects about her travels.
Miss Swanson was an active member of Thomas Carter D A R – Epsilon Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of Swansonville Methodist Church.

She is survived by two brothers Samuel W. Swanson Jr. (Barbara) of Ringgold, VA and Claude B. Swanson (Carol Sue) of Martinsville, VA. Also surviving are brother-in-law Gerald Gibson of Danville, VA. Two nephews Stephen P. Swanson (Stephanie) of Burlington, NC, Michael H. Swanson (Susan) of Germany. A great niece Ashley Swanson, three great nephews Bryan Swanson, Patrick Layton and Kevin Swanson.

She was preceded in death by a sister Katherine Swanson Gibson, a niece Kristen Gibson Cox, a niece Karen Swanson Yee and nephew David A. Swanson.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday May 8 11:00am at Swansonville Methodist Church with visitation to follow after interment.

The family request memorial contributions be made to Swansonville Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Roman Eagle including nurses, doctors, CNAs and office workers.
