Mary Ethel Daniel Sakellaris

Mary Ethel Daniel Sakellaris, born May 17th, 1925, of Danville, VA, passed away on February 14th, 2025, in Danville, VA.

She was born in Person County, NC, a daughter of the late Ralph Thomas Daniel and Mary Sue Daniel. She grew up in Caswell County, where she went to Cobb Memorial High School, where she played on the Championship winning basketball team, scoring the winning point herself. After high school, she married the late Sam Harry Sakellaris. She went on to own properties as well as a farm in Sutherlin, VA. 

She was a member of the St. Peter’s Greek Orthodox Church, where she taught Sunday School. She was an avid UNC Basketball fan. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting. 

She is survived by a daughter, Stella Sakellaris-Newill and husband, Russell W. Newill; and a son, Sam H. Sakellaris, Jr.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by a daughter, Mary Lea Myers.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 18th, 2025, at 2 PM at Townes Funeral Home with Father Demetri Kangelaris officiating. Interment will follow the service in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
