Mary Hawkins Payne died on January 30, 2017 at Riverside Health and Rehab of complications following a fall in November 2016. She was born February 7, 1930 in Pittsylvania County to the late Lillie Burnette and John Dickerson Hawkins. She was married to the late Luther Hill Payne, who preceded her in death. Mary was a member of the St. John's United Methodist Church of Stony Mill, the Pittsylvania County Historical Society and the Society of the Dames of the Magna Carta. She was an avid reader of history, a talented quilter, artist, and a talker. Survivors include her daughters, Mary Hill Payne Land (Keith), Lois Hawkins Payne Spencer (Boyd), Betsy Payne Putney (Doug), son Don Payne of the home and five grandchildren, Katherine, Booker, Jon, Reid, and Martha and five great-grandchildren. Her sister, Louise Hawkins Bliss and her husband, Charles, also survive her. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 2 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Stony Mill at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne Moore officiating. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Tunstall Volunteer Fire Department or St. John's United Methodist Church.
