Mary Ellen McCarty Hampton, 98, passed away on December 14, 2017 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a fall and short decline. Born in Edinburg, IL, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Ruth McCarty. Mary Ellen was a graduate of the University of Illinois with a Bachelors in Business Administration. In 1940, she married Vern James “Jim” Hampton. They raised their family in Champaign, IL until Jim retired. They then traveled the country according to where the next golf course was located. Upon Jim’s death in 1988, Mary Ellen moved to Danville where she became active in the YWCA, Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, and the Danville Public Library. She is survived by her daughter Lynn Lawrence, of Danville, VA and son, Vern Hampton, III, of Austin, TX; two grandsons, Jason Lawrence (Stephanie) and Paul Lawrence (Sherry); and five great grandchildren, Zachary, Ryan, Evan, Brianna, and Samantha. She also leaves behind friends, Ruth, Lalor, Jackie, Shirley and her wonderful neighbors. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Betty Kern.
