Mrs. Mary (Ellen) Wells Carter, age 92 died Monday, December 24, 2018 at SOVAH Danville after a decline in health. She was born in Martinsville on April 21, 1926, a daughter of the late John T. Wells and Ruby Wells. Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Martinsville High School.  She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, Danville Golf Club for over 50 years, past President of the Ladies Golf Association, past President of the Wayside Garden Club and the Wednesday Club.  Mrs. Carter was also a member of Robertson-Bennett # 70 Order of the Eastern Star.  Mr. and Mrs. Carter served as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron several times.  Mrs. Carter had served as Grand Officer. She was married to the late, Charles Joseph Cater, Jr., who died January 3, 2001. Besides her parents and husband Mrs. Carter was predeceased by a brother, Reverend Howard F. (Fletcher) Wells and a sister, Virginia Watson. Surviving are one daughter; Catherine Woods and her husband Andy. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. from the graveside at Mountain View Cemetery with the Reverend Tim Hayes officiating. The family request that memorials may be directed to Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, 2526 North Main Street, Danville, VA  24540. The family will be at the residence of her daughter and her husband, 2528 Kentuck Road, Ringgold, Caneridge Farm.
