Malcolm W. Jones Jr., 84, of 307 Clover Lane, Danville, VA passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012 at this residence after a decline in health for the last few months. He had been an esophageal cancer survivor for the past 21 years. Mr. Jones was born in Danville, VA on April 19, 1928 a son of the late Malcolm W. Jones, Sr. and the late Wilma Knight Jones. He lived most of his life in Danville, VA and Hyco Lake, NC. He retired after 28 years in 1983 as a funeral director. In his retirement, he dedicated 8 years as a security guard of the Danville Public Schools. He was also a charter member of the Danville Life Saving Crew and the Happy Warriors (Korean), a lifetime member of Redmen 124, and a member of American Legion Post 1097. He was a veteran of World War II aboard the USS New and of the Korean War aboard the USS Wisconsin. He was a devout follower of the Holiness faith. On June 2, 1979 he married Barbara M. Jones, his wife of 33 years, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Garry Mack Jones, one daughter, Amy Pretty, one daughter-in-law, Vicky P. Matherly, and two grandchildren, Amanda M. Stowe and her husband Jonathan, and Crystal R. Matherly; of Danville. He will also be greatly missed by his beloved Corgi, Duke. He was predeceased by his son, Glenn H. Matherly. The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Brazer and staff of Durham Gastroenterology Consultants, Dr. Theodore Pappas and staff of Duke University Medical Center, Dr. Charles Bethea and staff of Veterans Affairs in Clinic in Danville, and Legacy Hospice of the Piedmont. Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 11:00am at Highland Burial Park with Reverend Ronnie Jones and Reverend Neal Isom officiating. Family will receive friends graveside one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, 202 Christopher Lane Danville, VA 24541 or to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, KS 66675. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street is serving the Jones family.
