Lura Chaney

October 3, 1924 — May 13, 2019

Lura Rella Gibson Chaney departed this life and entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 13, 2019.  Born in Pittsylvania County on March 10, 1924, to the late James Walter Gibson and Mittie Hoskins Gibson, Lura lived in the Mountain Hill Community for more than seventy years.  She helped her late husband, Thornton Wilson Chaney, Sr., as they operated Chaney's Store. During those years the Chaneys farmed and became well-known vendors at Country Boy's Flea Market where Lura specialized in many types of flowers and plants.      She enjoyed the outdoors with all the beauty God creates for our pleasure.  She was active in numerous church-related activities and particularly enjoyed teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir.  As president of the Ladies' Ministry, she served in other church capacities. Her final church home was Central Boulevard Church of God where she regularly attended services until she was no longer able.    In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sons Thornton W. Chaney, Jr. and David Alan Chaney.  They were joined in heaven by their father Thornton, Sr. on November 26, 2012. She was also predeceased by her brother, Claude A. Gibson, and her sisters Masie G. Cox and Sadie G. Wilson, leaving Lura as the final member of her birth family.      Survivors include her daughters-in-law, Susan R. Chaney and Martha Chaney Basista (Mike).  Also surviving are grandchildren Tony Chaney (Becky), Wendy Chaney-Morgan (Jeff White), Elizabeth Hensley Chaney (Daniel Gómez Patiño), Alan Chaney (Abby), and Matthew Chaney (Sara Brockman).  Great-grandchildren surviving are Haley Dodson-Overman (Wesley), Andrew Dodson, Lucas Chaney, David Gage Chaney, and Hayden Clay Chaney. Also remaining are nephews Randolph Gibson and Robert Cox and her niece Janet Adkins.      The family wishes to express its deep gratitude for the loving care provided Lura during her later years by Elizabeth Pannell, Ebony Lampkins, Tamara Pannell, and Brandi Waters making it possible for her to remain in her home.    In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution to Ringgold Volunteer Fire and Rescue, an agency that faithfully provides service to the community and was always available when Lura needed their services. Contributions can be mailed to P. O. Box 10, Ringgold, VA 24586. Funeral services will be held at Townes Memorial Chapel on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 2 p.m. with visitation beginning at 1 p.m.  Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
