Lucius Gregory Read died October 30th, 2016, after a brief illness at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center. Greg was born in Richmond, VA on April 25, 1951 to Jean B. Read and Lewis Wright Read. He attended elementary school in South Hill, VA and graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, VA. He then worked at the Danville Family YMCA for many years. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and the Landis Sunday School Class. Greg was born with cerebral palsy. He always had an inner strength and determination to enjoy life and to function better, although handicapped. Greg loved following football, basketball and baseball in the papers and on television. Greg had a remarkable ability to recall sport’s statistics. He was an avid fan of North Carolina State University sports, especially during the years of Jim Volvano, as basketball coach. Greg is survived by his mother Jean B. Read; his uncle Lucius H. Bracey, Jr, and his wife Pam and their children; and several aunts from his father’s side and their children. The family wants to thank the exceptionally supportive and caring staff for the care rendered to Greg and his family at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center. Thanks as well to special friends, Tom Leggett and Frank Cuthrell for their longtime friendship and support. Legacy Hospice also provided outstanding care to Greg and his family. A visitation will be held at Townes Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A graveside service and burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in South Hill, VA on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at 11:00 am with the Reverend Bart Fletcher officiating.
