Lois Sparks Hayes, of Danville, VA, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2023.
She was born on May 21, 1933, in Henry County to the late Vertie Tucker Sparks and Thomas Richard Sparks. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her two brothers, Bill Sparks and Charlie Sparks; along with her sister, Margie Sparks Angell.
She is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 68 years, Ray Herbert Hayes. She is also survived by her three children, Lori Lape (Nick), of Richmond, VA, Herby Hayes (Cindy), of Danville, and Marcie Slayton (Keith), of Appomattox, VA. Lois (Nana) leaves behind eight Grandchildren and twelve Great- Grandchildren.
Lois Graduated in 1951 from Schoolfield High School and was a proud graduate of The Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. She was a extremely accomplished nurse, who had a spirit of love and compassion that greatly informed her delivery of nursing care. In her last nursing job, she served as a head nurse at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute. While there, she was injured in the line of duty and suffered many health setbacks as a result.
Lois was a gifted homemaker, cook, entertainer of friends, painter, crafter, thrift store aficionado, square dancer, belly dancer and could make a penny squeal.
She was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church and served in many capacities there, including being a choir member.
She loved living at Myrtle Beach for several years and especially loved walking on the beach, collecting seashells, and would say I am never in a hurry there. She will be missed more than words can say by friends and family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 937 Main St., Danville, VA 24541, with a visitation an hour prior.
