Our hearts are broken to announce, that Linwood Charles Phelps died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 14, 2019 in Salisbury, NC. Linwood was born July 23, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, the eldest of 5 children born to the late Charlie Phelps and Annie Ruth Turner Phelps. On May 15, 1993, he married his wife, Valerie Davis Phelps, who survives. He is also survived by his son, Lenord "Chip" Phelps, his brother Timmy Phelps, and his special nieces and nephews, Christopher Fitzgerald, Stacy Crockett, Taylor Jacobs and Shane Crockett, and several other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Ida Lynch and Nancy Combs, and his brother Raymond Phelps. Linwood was a bus driver for over 45 years working for Trailways/Greyhound and D&M Charter Bus Co. Linwood was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Viet Nam era. He was an Honorary Life Member and Past Commander of the American Legion Memorial Post 325, where he was an active member for 39 years. One of the things Linwood loved most, in addition to his family and driving a bus, was cooking. He cooked for many of the functions the Post held. At Linwood’s request, his body has been donated to Wake Forest School of Medicine for medical research. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Linwood’s life on Saturday May 4th at 3 PM at the Post home, 135 American Legion Blvd. At other times the family will be at home, 1221 Rosemary Lane, Danville. The family also requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the American Heart Association or to the Charity of your choice.
