Linda Cook

December 31, 1969 — May 5, 2018

Linda Gail Hoskins Cook left this world bound for Heaven after well-lived life, filled with travel, adventure, compassion, and love, but tragically capped by a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s, at age 69.  She passed away at her home of 39 years, surrounded by the love of her closest family members. Linda was born August 26th, 1948 in Danville, Virginia.  She graduated with honors from both George Washington High School, in 1966, and from Averett University, in 1992, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.       Linda and her husband, Herman, loved to travel.  While Herman was in the U.S. Navy, they toured all of Europe in their two-door MGB convertible, and visited 40 of the 50 states. Later in life, during the 8 years their son lived in Japan, they traveled the cities and countryside, shrines and castles of Japan; exploring and experiencing their culture. They also took two fond and memorable trips to four of the Hawaiian Islands, once with their son, and then once again with their daughterin-law, also.  Linda also had a special affection for Hilton Head, South Carolina, where she and Herman spent many cherished vacations.     Linda was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where she played an active role with the sewing group, "The Sew Bees”, as a member of “Women on a Mission”, and the Women’s Missionary Union.     At heart, Linda was always fundamentally a caregiver to all those around her. She saw to the needs of many of her loved ones in the twilight of their time on earth, including her mom and dad, her special aunt, “Baudie”, and her husband, Charles, as well as her cousin “Dot”.    Linda was predeceased by her father, Otis Hoskins, Sr. and mother, Ollie Hill Hoskins.  Linda was married to Herman W. Cook for 50 years, who still resides at their home.  In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Matthew Ryan Cook and his wife, Mariko Mukai Cook, of Richmond, VA.   Matthew was her only child and the love of her life.    Linda is survived by her brother, Otis Hoskins, Jr., and his wife Frances, as well as her sister, Donna Agee, and her husband, Robert, all of Danville, Virginia. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Marilyn Cook Flanary and Linda Cook Renick, and their husbands, Jack Flanary and John Renick, from Durham, North Carolina and Grand Island, Florida, respectively. Additionally, she leaves behind one special Niece, Heather Bateman, and 6 Nephews: Hunter Dawson, Don and Brent Flanary, and Johnny, Josh and Jay Renick. Finally, she also leaves behind a very special great niece, Bea Bateman, as well as her great nephews, C.J. Bateman, and Noah and Grayson Dawson.     The family will be taking visitors at their residence, as well as during a visitation at Hillcrest Baptist Church at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 12th. A memorial service will immediately follow held at 2:00 pm, remembering and celebrating her life on Earth. Linda always had the deepest of compassion and tenderness for animals and children. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to please perform an act of kindness to someone in need.
