Lewis Gibbons Carter, Jr., 96, of 227 Swain Drive, passed away on September 6, 2023, at his home. He was born February 9, 1927, on the Shady Grove Road in Providence, NC. He was the son of Lewis Gibbons Carter and Mamie Woods Carter.
Lewis graduated from Cobb Memorial School and attended Lees-McRae College. He served honorably in the Navy during WWII aboard the USS Osterhaus. Lewis worked for over 40 years at Virginia Bank and Trust company, starting as a teller and working his way up to a vice president. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 65 years. Lewis was also a longtime member of American Legion Post 325. He enjoyed working in the yard, reading, watching TV and playing bingo.
On March 11, 1950, Lewis married the love of his life, Ann Fowlkes, who passed away in 2018. He was also predeceased by sisters Mary Irvine Gay, Virginia Satterfield, Lucy Elliott, and Myrtle Shadrick, and brothers Frank Carter and Rev. Edwin Carter.
His life was dedicated to his family. Lewis was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by two daughters, Treva Carter Gould of Danville, and Debra Carter Lane of Chesterfield; and a son, Dennis Carter, and his wife, Regina, of Lynchburg. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Steven Gould and wife, Megan, of Danville, Andrea Lane Hammock and husband, Jamie, of Moseley, Rob Lane of Chesterfield, and Ryan Carter and wife, Caitlin, of Richmond; and four great grandchildren, Grace and Maggie Hammock of Moseley, and Julian and Ellie Gould of Danville.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 2 p.m. in Townes Memorial Chapel with Pastor Barbara Cousar officiating. The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the service.
