Lester Thomas Keel, Jr.; 70 of 526 Bermuda Road went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 21, 2018. He was born on January 12, 1948, in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Lester Thomas Keel, Sr. and Mabel Spivey Keel. He was the only son of nine children. A veteran of the U. S. Navy, Thomas proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was an avid Duke Basketball fan, loved NASCAR racing and loved spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and began every day with “Thank you God for another day, another day of life”. Thomas is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Cindy Owen Keel. His three “Bonus” children; Amy Freeman (Dennis), Tara Anderson (Jon) and Larry Lewis, Jr. (Danielle). Five precious granddaughters who brought joy to his life; Kristen Hudson (Matt Bray), Brianna Tabor (Cory), Ashlyn Tolley, Karter Anderson and Meredith Lewis. Thomas known affectionately by his sisters as “Bubba”, was predeceased by one sister, Sandra Powers. He is survived by his sisters; Fran Roper (Jim), twin sisters Jane Rittenhouse and Jean Hart, Patricia Blackwell, Cathy Payne (Morris) and Suzanne Duenas (Mark). Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 from 7 to 8 P.M. and at other times will be at the residence, 526 Bermuda Road. Following a private graveside service, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Owen Farm Loft, 1251 Stony Mill Road on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 1 P.M. with the Reverend Bob Yeaman and the Reverend David Owen officiating. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street, is serving the Keel family.
