Lawrence "Larry" Girard Wilson, Jr. died October 25, 2014. Mr. Wilson was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence "Lefty" Girard Wilson, Sr. He was born April 14, 1934 in Danville, Virginia. On December 30, 1958 he married Elizabeth "Betzy" Temple. Mr. Wilson was a 1952 graduate of George Washington High School where he was a member of the baseball team. In 1956, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in English. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. After college, he was employed by Coca Cola, Co. In 1958, Mr. Wilson returned to UNC to attend the School of Law, graduating with a LL.B. degree. After law school, Mr. Wilson was an associate member of Carter & Carter Law Firm from 1961-1962. From 1962-1963, he served as the Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Afterwards, he returned to a private practice of law, and later formed the partnership of Carter & Wilson with attorney John W. Carter. Later, he practiced law as a sole practitioner; he was the President of the Danville Bar Association. Mr. Wilson was a lifetime member of Main Street United Methodist Church. He served as the Chairman of the Administrative Board for many years. He also taught Sunday school. He was a member of Danville's City Council from 1974-1978. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of William T. Sutherlin Academy. He was a past president of the German Club of Danville and the Young Men's Club of Danville. He served on the board of Goodwill of Danville for a number of years. He was a member of the Danville Golf Club, The Water's Edge and a former member of Tuscarora Golf Club. Mr. Wilson was an avid golfer, tennis player, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed hiking the Appalachian Trail and trails off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Betzy, of the home, his three daughters, Elizabeth W. Walden (Keith), Mary Temple W. Mullis, Rebecca W. Atkinson, six grandchildren, Ben Mullis (Becky), Temple Mullis, Clif Walden (Kimmy), Wilson Walden (Leigh), Carpenter Walden, Brooke Atkinson, and one great-grandchild, Benjamin Mullis. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Denny Wilson Parr (Wilton) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Wilson Price and his brother and sister-in-law Brooke Temple (Susan). Graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at 2pm at Mt. View Cemetery by the Reverend Allen Thompson. The family will receive friends at 234 Magnolia Drive. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Townes Funeral Home and Crematory, 215 West Main Street will be serving the family.
