Kathryn Wyatt

Kathryn Elizabeth Benton Wyatt died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at her residence in Danville, Virginia. Born in Danville on May 11, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Nelson Benton and Margaret Davis Benton. Educated in the Danville school system, she earned an undergraduate degree at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and continued on to earn a Masters of Education from the University of Virginia. She returned home to teach at Stratford College. While teaching, she earned her Masters and PhD in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After Stratford College closed in 1974, she continued to teach at Danville Community College where she served as Associate Professor of Psychology until her retirement in 1996. Throughout her life, she was very active in civic and community service activities, which included First Baptist Church, YWCA, Friends of the Library, Free Clinic of Danville, Danville Concert Association, Wednesday Club, Gabriella Garden Club, and Shakespeare Study Club, among others. She also served on the Danville School Board from 1976-1988 and as Chair of the Southern region of the Virginia School Boards Association. Kathryn is survived by her husband of almost 69 years, Landon Russell Wyatt, Jr., and their children: Margaret Wyatt Scott of Danville; Landon Russell Wyatt, III and his wife, Edith; and Elizabeth Wyatt Ashe and her husband, William, all of Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Elizabeth Scott Turner (Barrow); Kenneth Wyatt Scott (Caroline); Landon Russell Wyatt, IV (Mary Hadley); Margaret Benton Wyatt; Robert Hamilton Wyatt; William Shecut Ashe, III; Benton Wyatt Ashe; and Elizabeth Pope Ashe, as well as 2 great-grandsons: Charles Shepherd Turner and Landon Barrow Turner. She was predeceased by her parents, as well as an infant twin sister, Margaret Wayland Benton, and a brother, J. Nelson Benton, Jr. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at 2:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church by Pastor Ryan Busby, followed by a burial at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 16, 2021, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of her daughter, Margaret Scott. The family offers their greatest appreciation to all her caregivers. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
