Judith Kay McKinney Moore, 80, of Danville, Virginia, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday December 11, 2024. Kay was born on June 28, 1944 to two wonderful parents --- Lafayette Wadsworth McKinney Sr. & Katie Jones McKinney --- and was a loving sister to Lafayette W. McKinney Jr. aka “Sonny Boy”, Sherry Ann McKinney DiBagno, and David D. McKinney.
In 1963, Kay met Rosser Lee Moore at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church. They went on to be married on November 14, 1964, a date she fondly remembered this year as what would have been their 60th anniversary.
Kay is survived by her daughter Lisa M. McDowell, son Rosser Lee Moore II; her beloved grandsons Lawrence Wesley Creasy II, “Wes Mess” as per Big, and Gilbert Houston McDowell aka “ Huey” or “Hueylu”, along with Prince – the granddog.
Kay graduated from Stratford College and spent her entire work career at two jobs. She not only devoted her time and efforts to her siblings, children, and grandchildren, but also her work family. She worked the first part of her life in the medical field for surgeons Dr. Pritchett and Dr. Mallare until their retirement and closure of the practice when she was then recruited from the office by patients –The Baldwins, and went on to spend the rest of her years at RJ Baldwin Agency, Inc., devoted to her job until the age of 80. For over a quarter of a century Kay shared her life with Bob and Tammy Warren, Pam Watkins, Colby and Channing Warren, and recently baby James, who brought her so much joy.
Big Mama aka “Big” was an inspiration and a comfort to us all. Those who were blessed to spend time or share words with her were forever amazed at her patience and understanding. She was mediator, confidant, problem-solver, and loving listener through all number of life’s ups and downs. The family has lost its rock, but the innumerable instances of fortitude and love we’ve been so lucky to experience are lessons that could guide one across tens of lifetimes.
Big was devoted to family and friends, and she loved her cherished places: the Outer Banks, where the entire family has had so much joy over the years; her thousand-year-old La-Z-Boy chair, with a bag of York peppermint patties or Hershey’s Kisses and a water tower’s worth of Diet Coke, either escaping to Regency England on her Kindle or watching a Liverpool match with her grandsons; and anywhere her family was together, even if we could never make it look quite like the Hallmark cards.
Big was our biggest fan. She was our coach and our teacher. She was our editor. She was our center and the glue that held everything together. She had a quiet strength that could move mountains and an immense, determined heart that has moved us to tears. Her example is the wheel that will keep her family moving, despite a loss that is irreplaceable.
Graveside service will be held Tuesday December 17, 2024 at 2 pm at Highland Burial Park. All are welcome to meet at Townes Funeral Home around 1:30 pm to follow the procession to Highland for the service.
